The FIFA Women's World Cup
Thoughts of an armchair observer on investing in, celebrating, respecting and promoting women's sport
Last night I watched the Matildas semi-final against England with my sons. I was struck by two things about the match (apart from that epic goal by Sam Kerr).
First, did you hear the crowd? It sounded different. That was the full-throated sound of more girls and women participating as fans of women’s football and women’s sport in general.
That was the sound of inclusion.
Secondly, where were all the ads for Women’s AFL? That seems like a missed opportunity to this armchair observer.
Last time I looked, all my money was the same colour. There’s no pink money and there’s no blue money.
What last night should have showed those in the business of sport is that if you invest in women’s and girls’ facilities, women’s and girls’ sport, women’s and girls’ participation at all levels and you respect, promote and celebrate it, the money you’ll make will be exactly the same colour as the money you make from men’s sport.
